Some of you know that I know personally already know that I took a “social sabbatical” during the summer. I completely gave up all social media, turned off my phone and my computer for over a month. I also left Austin and the comfort of my everyday routine and poured a lot of effort into my own spiritual and personal growth. It was one of the best things I have ever done for myself, my relationships, and my creativity. Definitely something I plan to do every year from now on. This piece from Patton Oswalt touches on some of the reasons why I chose to this. Apparently he also decided to disconnect for a while. I love that dude!
Since being back “on the grid” I have noticed the phone/internet becoming more of a central focus of my life again and I don’t always like the way I feel myself purposely distracting myself from real life with “Likes,” “Shares,” and “Feeds.” I am going to be spending some more time away from being connected to the net more time focused on myself, my spirit, and my art. Hopefully this means more new music and plenty of live performances. I’m not leaving Facebook or social media for good (yet) but I am going to continue to mindful of how much attention I pay to being plugged in and I encourage you to do the same. Please don’t get me wrong - I love being connected to YOU, I just want to find the best balance in my own life so that I can truly be the best, most authentic version of myself that I can be.
